Hydroxyethyl cellulose is composed of two parts: one is cellulose, and the other is the hydroxyethyl branch chain. Hydroxyethyl cellulose is produced by first reacting purified cellulose with sodium hydroxide to form an alkaline cellulose colloid, and then adding ethylene oxide to the colloid to make it. It belongs to a non-ionic water-soluble polymer. Therefore, it can have thickening, bonding, dispersion, stabilizing effects, and can retain moisture, form a film and provide protective colloid.
The substitution value of hydroxyethyl cellulose is between 1.5 and 2.5. It is soluble in both hot and cold water, providing a wide range of viscosity solutions, and can accept the concentration of electrolytes in the solution.

The degree of substitution, solubility and viscosity range are very wide. It has good thermal stability (below 140℃) and does not produce precipitation under acidic conditions. Heat resistance and water solubility: Compared with methylcellulose (MC) which can only dissolve in cold water, hydroxyethylcellulose can dissolve in both hot water and cold water. It does not precipitate even when heated or boiled, giving it a wide range of solubility and viscosity properties, as well as non-gelation characteristics.

Salt tolerance: Due to its non-ionized nature, it can coexist with a wide range of other water-soluble polymers, surfactants, and salts. Therefore, compared to the ionic carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), hydroxyethyl cellulose has better salt resistance.
Water retention, leveling and film-forming properties
Water retention, leveling and film-forming properties: Its water retention capacity is twice that of methylcellulose. It has excellent flow regulation properties, as well as excellent film-forming, fluid loss reduction, compatibility and colloid protection properties.
