Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is synthesized by reacting cellulose with chloroacetic acid under alkaline catalysis. Polar (organic acid) carboxyl groups endow cellulose with solubility and chemical reactivity. The functional properties of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) depend on the degree of substitution of the cellulose structure (i.e. the number of hydroxyl groups involved in the substitution reaction), the chain length of the cellulose main chain structure, and the aggregation degree of carboxymethyl substituents.
