At room temperature, elemental mercury is a silvery-white glittering liquid metal (commonly known as mercury), which is very volatile. Inorganic mercury compounds are mainly mercury salts. Except for mercuric sulfide (cinnabar) which is red, most of them are white powder or crystals. In nature, microorganisms can convert inorganic mercury into organic mercury, such as methane mercury, which is the most common organic mercury in nature.
