Mercury - HG(Hydrargyrum)

Mercury - HG(Hydrargyrum)

Mercury is a chemical element with the chemical symbol Hg, atomic number 80 and atomic weight 200.592 u. Mercury is located in the d zone of the periodic table. It is a dense, silvery-white transition metal that is liquid at room temperature. It is slightly volatile and has properties similar to those of rare gases. In addition to mercury, the only stable element that is liquid at room temperature is bromine, while cesium, gallium and rubidium melt at a temperature slightly higher than room temperature. The melting point of mercury is −38.83 °C (−37.89 °F; 234.32 K) and the boiling point is 356.73 °C (674.11 °F; 629.88 K), which is the smallest liquid temperature range of all metal elements.

Physical properties: Mercury is a silvery white, shiny heavy liquid with a high density and is easy to evaporate at room temperature. It is also the only metal that is liquid at room temperature.

Chemical properties: Mercury has poor thermal conductivity compared to other metals, but good electrical conductivity. It does not react with most acids, but can react with oxidizing acids (such as concentrated sulfuric acid, concentrated nitric acid and aqua regia). Mercury can react with hydrogen sulfide and powdered sulfur, and these properties are used for adsorption after treating mercury leaks.

Storage method

    1. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse.
    2. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The warehouse temperature should not exceed 30°C. Store separately from flammable (combustible) materials, acids, etc. and avoid mixed storage. The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and appropriate containment materials.
