Mercury, commonly known as quicksilver, is a chemical element with the chemical symbol Hg and atomic number 80. Its atomic weight is 200.592 u. Mercury is located in the d-block of the periodic table and is a dense, liquid silver-white transition metal at room temperature. It has a slight volatility and its properties are similar to those of rare gases. Apart from mercury, the only stable element that remains in a liquid state at room temperature is bromine. Cesium, gallium, and rubidium will melt at temperatures slightly higher than room temperature. The melting point of mercury is -38.83 °C (-37.89 °F; 234.32 K), and its boiling point is 356.73 °C (674.11 °F; 629.88 K), making it the metal with the smallest liquid temperature range among all elements.

The most common applications of mercury are in the production of industrial chemical drugs and its use in electronic or electrical products. Mercury is also used in thermometers, especially those used to measure high temperatures.
