Cellulose acetate, also known as cellulose acetate or cellulose acetate ester, is an acetate of cellulose. It was first discovered in 1865. Cellulose acetate is used in photography to make the base of photographic plates, and it is also a component of some adhesives. Cellulose acetate is also used in man-made fibers.

The cellulose acetate obtained by acetylation of rayon fibers is cellulose acetate fiber, which is a kind of artificial fiber. Rayon belongs to regenerated fibers and has many properties similar to those of silk, so it is also called artificial silk.

One of the uses of cellulose acetate is to manufacture cigarette filters. It has a notable effect of reducing tar content, but it cannot reduce the harm caused by cigarettes to smokers and bystanders.

Its tensile strength is much lower than that of nylon water filaments, and its elasticity is also poor. It can absorb about 6.5% of its own weight in water. When heated, it will soften and melt at around 232 degrees Celsius. It can burn, but it is not prone to catching fire. After long-term storage or exposure to sunlight, its tensile strength slightly decreases, but this does not affect its color.

Basic Characteristics


- Raw Materials: Utilizing wood pulp or cotton pulp as raw materials, acetylation reaction is conducted to replace the hydroxyl groups in cellulose with acetyl groups, thereby generating cellulose acetate.
- Solubility: It can be dissolved in organic solvents such as acetone, facilitating the spinning process.
- Appearance: Typically, it is white or semi-transparent filament bundles, with single filaments being slender and having a soft luster similar to silk.

 

Properties:


- Moisture Absorption: Moderate (wet regain is approximately 6% to 7%), superior to synthetic fibers but inferior to cotton.
- Thermoplasticity: Good, it can be shaped through heating.
- Acid and alkali resistance: Weak. Not resistant to high temperatures (softening point is approximately 230°C).
- Anti-wrinkling property: Good, but the strength is lower than synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon.

Production Process


1. Acetylation Reaction: Cellulose reacts with acetic anhydride under the action of a catalyst to form triacetic cellulose.
2. Partial Hydrolysis: Adjust the acetylation degree to obtain diacetic cellulose (more commonly used).
3. Syrup Preparation: Dissolve acetic cellulose in acetone to form a viscous spinning solution.
4. Dry Spinning: After the spinning solution is extruded from the spinneret, it undergoes solvent evaporation through hot air and is solidified into a filament bundle.
5. Post-treatment: Processes such as stretching, curling, and cutting are carried out to adjust the strength, loftiness, and other properties of the filament bundle.
