Cellulose acetate tow is a chemical fiber made from natural cellulose and is primarily used in applications such as cigarette filters.
Cellulose Acetate Tow Manufacturing Process
The manufacturing process is as follows:
1. Pretreatment
The raw cellulose is crushed and bleached.
Drying is performed to a moisture content of <5%.
2. Acetylation
Cellulose, acetic anhydride, and a catalyst (sulfuric acid) are added to a reactor.
Control the temperature at 20-40°C and allow the reaction to proceed for 2-4 hours.
Produces cellulose triacetate (DS ≈ 3).
3. Partial Hydrolysis
Add water for controlled hydrolysis.
Converts cellulose triacetate to cellulose diacetate (DS ≈ 2.4).
This step determines the solubility and processing properties of the final product.
4. Precipitation and Purification
The reaction product is poured into water for precipitation.
Repeated water washing is performed to remove residual acid and catalyst.
Centrifugal dehydration is performed to obtain cellulose acetate flakes.
5. Drying
Hot air drying to <3% moisture
Producing cellulose acetate flakes
6. Preparation of spinning solution
Dissolve cellulose acetate flakes in acetone
Prepare a 20-25% spinning solution
Filter and degas
7. Dry spinning
Extrude the spinning solution through a spinneret
Volatilize the solvent in hot air (80-120°C)
Form continuous monofilaments (approximately 20-40 μm in diameter)
8. Tow forming
Bundle multiple monofilaments
Apply crimps (10-15 crimps per inch)
Cut to a specified length (usually 6-8 mm)
9. Post-processing
Oil treatment (to improve processing properties)
Drying and shaping
Packaging of finished products
