Products Description
Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is a water-soluble polymer compound with the chemical formula [C6H7O2(OH)2OC2H4OH]n. It is a white or slightly yellow amorphous short fibrous powder, odorless and tasteless, easily absorbs moisture [3], has a specific gravity of 0.55~0.75 [2], is easily soluble in water, and is soluble in a few polar solvents such as formic acid, formaldehyde, dimethyl sulfone, dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, etc. It is partially dissolved or swells in butyraldehyde and acetic acid. HEC does not ionize in water, has good acid and alkali resistance, and does not react with heavy metals to form precipitation. When pH < 3, HEC will acidolyze to reduce the viscosity of the aqueous solution. Under the action of strong alkali, HEC will undergo oxidative degradation, and the viscosity of the aqueous solution will decrease due to heat and light. It is stable in the pH range of 6.5~8.0.
Product performance

1. HEC is soluble in hot or cold water, and does not precipitate at high temperature or boiling, which makes it have a wide range of solubility and viscosity characteristics, and non-thermal gelation;
2. It is non-ionic and can coexist with other water-soluble polymers, surfactants, and salts in a wide range. It is an excellent colloidal thickener for high-concentration dielectric solutions;
3. The water retention capacity is twice that of methyl cellulose, and it has better flow regulation;
4. Compared with the recognized methyl cellulose and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, HEC has the worst dispersibility, but the strongest protective colloid ability.
main application
Building materials: HEC is often used as a thickener and water-retaining agent for building coatings, as well as a binder and water-retaining agent for materials such as cement and gypsum.
Oil extraction: In oil extraction, HEC can be used as a thickener and fluid loss reducer for drilling fluids, as well as a thickener and proppant carrier for fracturing fluids.
Cosmetics and personal care: HEC is used as a thickener, binder, film former and stabilizer in products such as shampoo, conditioner, and hair spray to improve product texture and feel.
Coatings: HEC is an important ingredient in coating formulations, which can improve the thickening, water retention, film forming and dispersibility of coatings.
Papermaking and inks: HEC is used as a glazing agent for paper and paperboard, as well as a protective colloid for inks.
Textiles: HEC is used for sizing textiles to improve the wear resistance and gloss of fabrics.
Other industries: HEC is also widely used in ceramics, medicine, food, agriculture and other industries.

HEC's advantages
Easily soluble in cold and hot water: easy to use in a variety of formulations.
Good water solubility: forms a highly transparent solution with a variety of viscosities.
Excellent thickening properties: can effectively increase the viscosity of the system.
Good water retention: can retain moisture and prevent the material from drying out.
Good film-forming properties: can form a protective film and improve the durability of the material.
Good compatibility: compatible with a variety of surfactants and additives.
Safety: HEC is safe for the human body at the recommended concentration and conditions of use
