Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is an inert viscoelastic polymer that is used as an emulsifier, thickener and suspending agent, similar to animal gelatin. HPMC is used in the development of controlled-release drugs. It is soluble in water and undergoes reversible gelation upon heating. It is non-ionic and cannot form complexes with ionic substances. It has surface activity and enzyme resistance.

According to its application, HPMC can be classified into: construction grade, food grade and medicine grade. Currently, most of the domestic products are of construction grade. Among them, putty powder is used in large quantities, accounting for approximately 90% of the total usage, and the rest is used for cement mortar and glue.
