Hydroxyethyl cellulose is a gelling agent and thickening agent derived from cellulose. It is widely used in cosmetics, cleaning solutions and other household products. Hydroxyethyl cellulose and methyl cellulose are often used together with hydrophobic drugs in capsule formulations to improve the dissolution of the drugs in gastrointestinal fluids. This process is called hydrolysis.
The properties of hydroxyethyl cellulose
1. HEO can dissolve in hot water or cold water. It does not precipitate even when heated or boiled, which gives it a wide range of solubility and viscosity properties, as well as non-gelation characteristics.
2. It is a non-ionic type substance that can coexist with a wide range of other water-soluble polymers, surfactants, and salts. It is an excellent colloidal thickening agent for solutions containing high concentrations of electrolytes.
3. Its water retention capacity is twice that of methylcellulose and it also has good flow regulation properties.
4. The dispersibility of HEC is inferior to that of the commonly used methylcellulose and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, but it has a strong ability to protect colloids.

Hydroxyethyl cellulose can be used as a coating agent, binder, cement and gypsum additive, thickener, suspending agent, pharmaceutical excipient, anti-fog agent, oil well fracturing fluid, drilling treatment agent, pulp thickener for fibers and paper, wetting solution, dispersant, membrane additive, ink additive, preservative and scale inhibitor, cosmetics, toothpaste, casting agent, heat recording paper, lubricant, sealant, gel agent, waterproof agent, bactericide, bacterial culture medium, etc. It is widely applied in the fields of coatings, petroleum, construction, daily chemical products, polymer polymerization and textile industries.
