Physical properties
Appearance: White to light yellow, tasteless, odorless powder or granules
Solubility: Rapidly dissolves in cold water to form a transparent or slightly turbid viscous solution
Viscosity range: Depending on the model, it varies from a few hundred mPa·s to 100,000 mPa·s (usually measured in a 2% aqueous solution)
pH stability: Stable in the pH range of 2–12
Thermal stability: Good stability at high temperatures, long-term heating will lead to degradation
Chemical properties
HEC is a non-ionic polymer with strong resistance to acids, alkalis and electrolytes, and good compatibility with a variety of other additives (surfactants, emulsifiers, additives, etc.).
HEC production process
Mercerization: natural cellulose is treated with sodium hydroxide to activate the hydroxyl groups.
Etherification reaction: cellulose treated with alkali is reacted with ethylene oxide to introduce hydroxyethyl groups
Neutralization, washing and drying: remove residual alkali and by-products to produce finished powder
